We had the inaugural XMPP/realtime meetup held at Mozilla London on the 13th March which was sponsored by my employer Surevine.

At Surevine we believe that XMPP has a very important place in the future of the web and this goes hand-in-hand with realtime technologies too which is why we’ve started this meetup which will hopefully grow into its own entity.

I’ve written a blog post up on the Surevine website about the event which I suggest you read if you are interested. This also contains details about finding out more about the event and where to get information on future planned events too.

I was talking at the meetup about my new open source project called XMPP-FTW. As part of the talk I’ve gave an introduction to XMPP on the web and then talked about the problems with getting developers to use XMPP in their front end applications.

I’ll put another post up about XMPP-FTW but basically it acts as a translator between the XML of XMPP and JSON, the favoured data transport of the browser world. It uses named events to help reduce the amount of data and complexity of XMPP in the browser and I hope that it will get adopted.

As always the code is up on github https://github.com/lloydwatkin/xmpp-ftw and a demo system is also available at https://xmpp-ftw.jit.su. Please feel free to start using it or help contribute to the project.

To find out more about the XMPP/realtime meetup please checkout our Lanyrd page too: XMPP UK Meetup. Our second event is going to be held on 22nd May 2013.

Anyway here’s my slides (http://www.rvl.io/lloydwatkin/xmpp-ftw):
